I am a frequent traveller and I am ok with low cost airline terminals, but I found Avalon lacking in a few areas compared to others:1. Everything is so slow from check-in, security to even buying some food once you get through Immigration.2. Only one food shop after Immigration. Very, very slow and inefficient service. It could and should be much better.
This place is a disgrace for inbound international flights, not a good impression on visitors especially with minimum English.Very slow customs checkout, no water available, duty free is expensive, sky bus to city $24 Ripoff, just 1 food outlet, cafe coffee is a joke, no telephone companies to buy sim card...On the bright side staff are nice
The packing space is great whereby it is close to terminal. Front desk service was friendly. The worst experience is the security check which operated by a group of non English speaking with very bad attitudes. The x-ray machine was most advance technology required passengers to take the tray under the conveyor and put the luggage into the tray compare with standard airport x-ray which just leave the luggage directly on the moving belt. Security shouted on the passenger who lift their luggage directly on the belt without taking these tray under the belth. With non of these instructions available to guide the passenger plus the approach of correcting who wrongdoing was very disturbing and disappointed.
Service is friendly but there are a lot of problems. System is always down, baggage is always delayed. Food is also extremely expensive so I would advise eating before even coming here.
I was quite unsure of what to expect as its been less than 1 week of international operations. To my surprise, everything was laid out well. Parking starts at 5$ an hour and there is ample parking. Some renovation work happening there - but manageable. In the terminal Avalon Ambassadors are ready to help with any queries. Cafeteria - just one at the moment and is decently priced. There is a 2 minute walk between the checkin counter (which is in the domestic terminal) and the international departures.Drive back from parking was a bit scary at night. Narrow single lane and no street lights; again renovation ongoing hopefully it will be fixed soon.Overall to the brand new airport of Melbourne west.
